  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

This article was previously published under Q301488

SYMPTOMS

The Windows Explorer menu option for formatting the LS240 media does not exist; however, you can format it from a command line.

For example, if you open Windows Explorer, and then right-click the LS240 drive in the My Computer folder, there is no option to format the drive.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because LS240 is a new media and drive type that was released during the development of Windows XP. The format functionality exists for the newer Matsushita-Kotobuki Electronics 240 megabyte (MB) drives but no menu option exists in Windows XP.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, from a command prompt, type the following command line, and then press ENTER:

format [volume]

The LS drive will format the media to 240 MB if the media is supported.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
