SYMPTOMS
When you apply a post SR-1 update, you may receive an error
message similar to the following:
Error 1328. Error
applying patch to file C:\program files\Microsoft Office\Winword.exe. It has
probably been updated by other means, and can no longer be modified by this
patch. For more information contact your patch vendor.
If you turn
on verbose logging for the update (patch), you find text similar to the
following in the log file:

NOTE: To create a verbose log file for a post SR-1 client update, use
a command line similar to the following
path\patch file /c:"ohotfix9.exe /v"
where
path is the full path to the
download, and
patch file is the download file name.
NOTE: The relevant line in the log file is the line for
SetSourceFolder. The preceding log file text indicates a path to an
administrative installation.
CAUSE
This error message appears if all of the following items
are true:
- You are using a network client workstation that installed
Office from an administrative installation.
- The Office administrative installation has been updated
beyond the SR-1 level, for example, to SP-2.
- You are applying a post SR-1 client update to the network
client workstation.
Any post SR-1 client update requires that you have an SR-1
source location available for updating the client workstation. Because the
administrative installation was already updated to a level beyond SR-1 (for
example, SP-2), the versions of the files on the administrative installation
are later than those expected by the post SR-1 updates.
