Visio2000: Macro Virus Protection Is Off by Default (299963)

SUMMARY

Visio began including Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) in its product line, beginning with Visio 4.5. For all editions of Visio 4.5, 5.0, and 2000, the Macro virus protection setting is turned off by default on installation.

NOTE: In Microsoft Visio 2002, the Macro Security setting is turned on and set to Medium by default.

Microsoft advises that you select the Macro virus protection check box, as a preventative measure that displays a visible warning when a drawing contain macros.

The Macro virus protection setting is designed to prevent macro viruses from running. If you receive Visio files as attachments to e-mail messages, or from a network or Internet site that is not secure, Microsoft recommends that you select this check box. If you do so, Visio asks you whether or not to make macros available whenever you open a drawing that contains macros.
  • If you trust that file contains useful macros, click Enable Macros in the Document Macro Warning dialog box.

  • If you do not trust the drawing's source, or if you were not expecting the drawing to contain macros, click Disable Macros in the Document Macro Warning dialog box.

Making Macro Virus Protection Available

To select the Macro virus protection check box, so that a warning message appears, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Advanced tab.
  2. Click to select the Macro virus protection check box.
  3. Click OK.
NOTE: The Document Macro Warning dialog box does not appear when you open a drawing that does not contain a macro.
