OL2000: Error Message: Unable to Communicate with Outlook's OLE Automation Interface (299936)

SYMPTOMS

When you perform a synchronization between a Palm handheld device and Outlook 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Unable to communicate with Outlook's OLE Automation interface.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, remove Outlook, and then reinstall it:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then remove Outlook.
  3. Search for the following files, and then rename them if they exist:
    • Mapi*.dll
    • Mapi*.exe
    • Mapi*.ini
    • Mapi*.inf
    • Outl*.dll
    • Outl*.exe
    • Outl*.ini
    • Ems*.*
    • Extend.dat
    • Outcmd.dat
    • Frmcache.dat
  4. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  5. Locate and delete the following keys in the registry:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Schedule+
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook
  6. Quit Registry Editor.
  7. Restart the computer, close all background programs, and then reinstall Outlook.
