You receive the "WINWORD.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows" error message when you press ALT+F4 to quit Word 2000 (299925)

This article was previously published under Q299925 SYMPTOMS When you press ALT+F4 to quit Microsoft Word and to close all Word documents,
Word document buttons remain on the taskbar. When you click one of the buttons,
the Word window that appears is damaged (corrupted). When you right-click a
document button and then click Restore, you receive an error message similar to the following:
WINWORD.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
Windows. You will need to restart the program. CAUSE This problem occurs when more than one document is open,
and all the documents are minimized at the time you press ALT+F4.
RESOLUTION To resolve this problem, obtain the latest
service pack for Microsoft Office 2000. For additional information, click the

methods. Method 1: Maximize a Document Window- Maximize one of the Word document windows.
- On the File menu, click Exit.
Method 2: Reassign the ALT+F4 Key Combination Reassign the ALT+F4 key combination to the FileExit command.

This problem was first corrected in the Word 2000 Update:
April 25, 2002.MORE INFORMATION Word Help incorrectly states that you can use the ALT+F4
key combination to quit Microsoft Word. The default command for ALT+F4 is
actually FileCloseOrExit.
