SYMPTOMS

While the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is processing e-mail messages, the following access violation may occur and the e-mail processes may stop:

CAUSE

This behavior can occur as a result of stress in the SMTP service. Stress can occur when the Resvc and Smtpsvc services stop and start or when you use Clntsmtp.exe to send batches of random SMTP files to the local server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
