File and Print Services for NetWare Reports Insufficient IRPStackSize (299783)

SYMPTOMS

After you install a large number of filter drivers, File and Print Services for NetWare may exhibit one of the following conditions:
  • File and Print Services for NetWare may not start, and the following error message may be logged:
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: FPNWSRV
    Event ID: 2011
    Description: The server's configuration parameter "irpstacksize" is too small for the server to use a local device. Please increase the value of this parameter.
  • File and Print Services for NetWare may start successfully, but clients may be unable to connect and the following error message may be logged:
    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: FPNWSRV
    Event ID: 2011
    Description: The server's configuration parameter "irpstacksize" is too small for the server to use a local device. Please increase the value of this parameter.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when the number of installed filter drivers has reduced the available IRPStackSize below the minimum size that is required by File and Print Services for NetWare.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

After you apply this hotfix, you may need to modify the following registry values to resolve this problem. The values to use vary depending on the number of filter drivers that are installed.
  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe), and then click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\FPNW\Parameters

  2. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

    Value name: IRPStackSize
    Data type: REG_DWORD
    Radix: Decimal
    Value data: 16 (increase by increments of 2 if the problem persists)

  3. Quit Registry Editor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
