WD2001: "Save As" Format Set in Your Preferences Is Not Used (299750)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q299750

SYMPTOMS

When you save a new file or an existing file, Word 2001 does not propose the Save As format that is specified in your Preferences when the Save (or Save As) dialog box is displayed. Instead, the format is set to the default Microsoft Word 2001 document format.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Office Assistant is disabled or is not installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, download and install the Microsoft Office 2001 Service Release 1 file. To do so, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

WORKAROUND

To temporarily work around this issue, until you install the Microsoft Office 2001 Service Release 1 update, change the initial file format from Microsoft Word 2001 document to the format that you want by using the Format pop-up menu in the Save As dialog box before you click Save. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, click Save As.
  2. On the Format pop-up menu, select the format that you want, and then click Save.
NOTE: The file icon may not appear correctly, but the file will have the correct format.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac Service Release 1.

MORE INFORMATION

When the Assistant is active, and you change the default file format on the Save tab of the Preferences dialog box, a message appears when you save the document. The message warns you that the selected format may result in some data loss. The message is designed to be displayed by the Office Assistant.

If the Office Assistant is turned off or not installed, the message is not displayed, and the default file format, Microsoft Word 2001 document, appears in the Save (or Save As) dialog box, instead of the format that you chose in the Preferences dialog box.
