SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to reinstall or repair Microsoft Office 2000, you may receive an error message similar to the following:
The file 'D:\DATA1.MSI' is not a valid installation package for the product Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Premium. Try to find the installation package 'data1.msi' in a folder from which you can install Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Premium.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if Office 2000 was originally installed on your computer from an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) copy of Microsoft Office 2000 Small Business Edition, or a version of Office 2000 other than the version on the CD-ROM that you are attempting to use to repair or reinstall the software.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, uninstall the existing edition of Office 2000, and then reinstall the program from your CD-ROM. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Remove Office 2000

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the Add/Remove Programs dialog box, click Microsoft Office 2000 in the list of currently installed programs, and then click Remove. Click Yes to confirm the removal of Office 2000.
  4. If you are prompted to restart the computer after Setup is completed, do so.

Reinstall Office 2000

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the Add/Remove Programs dialog box, click Add New Programs, and then click CD or Floppy.
  4. Insert the Office 2000 CD-ROM, click Next, and then click Finish.
  5. If you are prompted to restart the computer after Setup is completed, do so.
