SYMPTOMS

Installing the preliminary version of any of the following Windows 2000 hotfixes on a computer that is running Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) causes the loss of some of the fixes that are included in SP2. This occurs regardless of the order of installation.

Note: You can use the date on which a hotfix was generated to determine if the hotfix is a preliminary version. If the hotfix was generated prior to the release of SP2 (May 16, 2001), it is a preliminary version. This only applies to hotfixes that are listed below. Hotfixes that are not listed below do not require any updates and are final versions.

CAUSE

Before SP2 was released, extensive testing took place to ensure that all of the included fixes were working correctly. During this time, new customer-requested fixes were not added to SP2. Instead, new customer-requested fixes were added to Service Pack 3 (SP3). In an effort to quickly provide a solution to these customers' problems, preliminary versions of these hotfixes were generated and released to the customers who needed them. These fixes are not included in SP2, but may be included in SP3.

Some problems were found during the testing of SP2. These problems were fixed in both SP2 and SP3. These fixes could not be included in the preliminary hotfixes, but the preliminary hotfixes had already been released to some customers. Now that SP2 has been completely tested and released, the preliminary hotfixes that were generated have been updated to included the necessary fixes, and final versions of these hotfixes have been generated. Customers who received a preliminary version of a hotfix need to obtain the final version of that hotfix to ensure they receive the full benefits of SP2.

RESOLUTION

Although the registry entries for these fixes are removed, previously installed hotfix information is still available in the file area maintained by the Service Pack installer. This assumes that the user instructed the Service Pack installer to maintain a copy of replaced files at installation. Use these steps to view this list:
  1. Find the Spuninst.inf file in the %SystemRoot%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\Spuninst folder.
  2. Open the file and find the [Reg.Restore.Keys] section.
  3. Find the entries that look like this, where Qnnnnnn is the Microsoft Knowledge Base article number of the installed hotfix:

    HKLM,SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Hotfix\Qnnnnnn,,reg00001

  4. The Microsoft Knowledge Base article number in the key is a hotfix that was installed prior to installing SP2.
