This article was previously published under Q299531

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Outlook e-mail client computers that connect to a Microsoft Exchange Server, through Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Terminal Server Edition, are not able to resolve the Exchange Server or the mailbox name. You can PING the Exchange Server by the IP address and NetBios name.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the remote procedure call (RPC) Configuration Service is not installed on the Terminal Server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, install the RPC Configuration Service on the Terminal Server. To do this:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then double-click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Network icon
  3. On the Services tab, click Add.
  4. Add the RPC Configuration Service.
  5. Restart your computer.

MORE INFORMATION

Exchange Server uses the RPC Configuration Service to connect to Outlook in a "Native" mode. This is the most efficient method of connecting, and is the recommended method of client/server connection in a local area network (LAN) environment.
