XL2001: Cells Duplicated and Overwritten When You Open Workbook (299514)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 2001, if you open a workbook that was previously saved, cells may be overwritten by duplicate data from other cells. That is, the text from one cell may be repeated in a block of cells.

On some occasions, if you save such a file after using the Paste command, Excel may stop responding.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you copy and paste a range that contains text into another workbook, and then save and close the target workbook. The problem appears when you reopen the workbook.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, download and install the Microsoft Office 2001 Service Release 1 file. To do so, visit the following Microsoft Web site: Microsoft Excel 2001 SR-1 prevents future data loss; however, it does not restore text that has already been incorrectly replaced.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac Service Release 1.
