CAUSE
This problem can occur if the Win.ini configuration file is incomplete.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use a plain text editor such as Microsoft Notepad or the Sysedit utility to modify the Win.ini file:
- Find the full path of the Win.ini file. To do so:
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
If you are running Microsoft Windows 2000, click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders. - Type win.ini in the Named box, click drive C in the Look in box, ensure that the Include subfolders check box is selected, and then click Find Now.
If you are running Windows 2000, type win.ini in the Search for files or folders named box, click drive C in the Look in box, and then click Search Now. - In the Results pane, note the full path of the Win.ini file. If more than one file is listed, note the file that has a path that begins with "C:\Windows" or "C:\Winnt".
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Notepad.
- In Notepad, click Open on the File menu, and then type the full path name of the Win.ini file that you noted in step c in the Look in box.
- Find the section that begins with "[Mail]", and then add the following lines. Some lines may already be listed, but all of the following lines must be listed for this feature to work as expected.
[Mail]
MAPI=1
CMC=1
CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
MAPIX=1
MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1

- Click Save, and then quit Notepad.
- Click Start, click Shut Down, and then click Restart the Computer.
