OL2002: You Cannot Create an Exchange Account in Outlook (299286)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q299286

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a Microsoft Exchange account in Outlook 2002, you may receive the following error message:
You cannot add a Microsoft Exchange account [to this profile] while Outlook is running. Please exit Outlook and use the Mail icon in the Control Panel to add a Microsoft Exchange Account.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the current profile previously had an Exchange account configured for it. Because of this, if you have the current profile open in Outlook, it "locks" certain portions of the profile and prevents changes from being made.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, add the Exchange account while Outlook is not running. To do this, click the Mail icon in Control Panel or right-click the Outlook icon on your desktop, and then click Properties.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
