  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional

This article was previously published under Q299249

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Visio, when you search for and find Visio shapes on the Web, and then attempt to drag the shapes from the Find Shape dialog box onto your drawing page, you may be unable to do so as expected.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your Internet connection is disconnected. Visio does not display a message to inform you that your network connection is lost, or that your Internet connection is no longer available. Visio does not cache shapes from a Web search in the Find Shape dialog box. As a result, you are unable to drag the shape to your drawing.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, re-establish your Internet connection, and then search the Web for the shapes that you want. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Visio, and then open your drawing.
  2. On the File menu, click Find Shape.
  3. In the Search for box, type one or more words that describe the shape that you want. You can separate words with spaces, commas, or semicolons. For example, to find shapes that represent office chairs, type chair.
  4. At the bottom of the Find Shape dialog box, click Options.
  5. Click the General tab.
  6. In the Where box, click to clear the My Computer check box, click to select the The Internet check box, and then click OK.
  7. Click Go.

The results of your search are listed in the Find Shape dialog box.
  8. Drag the shape that you want from the Find Shape dialog box to your drawing page.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The Find Shape command searches for shapes in stencils that are installed on your local hard disk. If you have an Internet connection, you can also search the Web for new Visio shapes, shapes that have been updated since you installed Visio, or shapes created by other companies. The shapes found by your search are displayed in the Find Shape dialog box. To use a shape, drag it from the Find Shape dialog box onto your drawing. Shapes that are located only on the Web have an arrow icon in the lower-left corner. For more information about finding Visio shapes on the Web, type finding shapes in the Ask a question box or the Answer Wizard, and then press ENTER to view the topics.
