This article was previously published under Q299215

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to convert an AutoCAD drawing, Microsoft Visio may stop responding, and then you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Visio has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you attempt to convert an AutoCAD document that is located within a Visio drawing that is itself embedded in a second Visio drawing.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, convert the AutoCAD drawing contained in the first Visio drawing before you insert the Visio drawing as an embedded object in a second Visio drawing. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start Visio and open the .vsd file that contains the AutoCAD drawing.
  2. Right-click the CAD drawing object, point to CAD Drawing Object on the shortcut menu, and then click Convert.
  3. In step 1 of the Convert Wizard, click Next.
  4. In step 2 of the Convert Wizard, select Delete selected DWG layers, and then click Finish.
  5. On the File menu, click Save, and then close the file.
  6. On the File menu, click Open, select the Visio drawing into which you want to insert the file that contains the converted AutoCAD drawing, and then click Open.
  7. On the Insert menu, click Object.
  8. In the Insert Object dialog box, select Microsoft Visio Drawing, click Create from file, and then click Browse.
  9. In the Browse dialog box, select the file that contains the converted AutoCAD drawing, and then click Open.
  10. Click OK to complete the insertion of the Visio drawing.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
