Visio2002: You Are Unable to Restore Multiple Instances of Visio (299191)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard
  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional
  • the operating system: Microsoft Windows 2000 SP2

This article was previously published under Q299191

SYMPTOMS

When you start more than one instance of Microsoft Visio 2002, and then you attempt to restore or switch to one of these instances, you may receive the following error message
This action cannot be completed because the
"Microsoft Visio - (filename:Model
Space)" program is not responding. Choose "Switch
To" and correct the problem.
and you are then unable to restore or quit the instance of Visio.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the following conditions are true:
  • You are using Visio 2002 on a Microsoft Windows 2002 Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based computer.

    -and-
  • You simultaneously start more than one instance of Visio.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, start each instance of Visio separately.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you select multiple files that are associated with Visio (.vsd) and then simultaneously open them (by pressing ENTER), a separate instance of Visio starts for each selected file. However, only one instance of Visio loads a file when it starts. All other instances of Visio appear to stop responding as they wait for the first instance of Visio to quit. When you quit the instance of Visio that successfully loaded a file, another instance of Visio may open another of the selected files. You may need to use the Windows Task Manager to quit the other instances by clicking the End Task command.

When you separately start several instances of Visio, you are able to open more than one file. You may also open several different files in one instance of the program by starting Visio first, and then opening the files by clicking Open on the File menu.
