Visio2002: Operation to Import Data to Your Visio Space Plan Diagram Does Not Work as Expected (299189)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard
- Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional
This article was previously published under Q299189 SYMPTOMS
When you import data from a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to your Microsoft Visio space plan diagram, the import operation may not work as expected. For example, the following behavior may occur:
- Imported data that is not matched to an existing space in your diagram may not appear in the Unplaced Data sections of the Category or Space Explorer windows on your drawing page.
- A report may not be generated, even though you selected the Show report check box in the Import Data Wizard.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if you use the Import Data Wizard to import data to a locked layer in your space plan diagram. Visio may not always perform this operation correctly, and does not display a message to inform you when the import operation is unsuccessful. As a result, when you import data to a locked layer, the imported data may not always be placed in the Unplaced Data section of the Category and Space Explorer windows as expected. In addition, when you click to select the Show report check box on the last page of the wizard, a report may not be created.
RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, unlock the layer in your space plan diagram into which you want to import data, and then import the data that you want to that layer. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start Visio and open your space plan diagram.
- On the View menu, click Layer Properties.
- In the Layer Properties dialog box, locate the layer that you want to unlock, click to clear the check mark in the Lock column, and then click OK.
- On the Plan menu, click Import Data to start the Import Data Wizard.
- Follow the instructions on the wizard pages to import the data to your space plan drawing.
If you want to view a report that displays the changes made to your drawing, click to select the Show report check box on the last page of the wizard.
Imported data that is matched to an existing space is listed in the Category and Space Explorer windows, and a shape representing the data is added to the space shape on your drawing.
Imported data that isn't matched to an existing space is automatically placed in the Unplaced Data section of both Explorer windows. You can drag these items to the location that you want on your drawing page.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
