The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Standard
  • Microsoft Visio 2002 Professional

This article was previously published under Q299169

SYMPTOMS

When you convert an inserted AutoCad (CAD) drawing that contains text into Microsoft Visio format, the position of the text in the converted drawing is shifted from its original position.

CAUSE

This problem can occur when the CAD drawing that you want to convert contains text that is saved in model space.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Start Visio, and then open your drawing.
  2. On the File menu, click Open.
  3. In the Open dialog box, under Files of type, click AutoCAD drawing (*.dwg;*.dxf), locate the CAD drawing that you want to insert, and then click Open.
  4. In the CAD Drawing Properties dialog box, click OK to accept the default drawing properties.
  5. Right-click the inserted CAD drawing, point to CAD Drawing Object, and then click Convert.
  6. In the Convert Wizard - Step 1 of 3 dialog box, press CTRL, click the layers or levels that contain the CAD objects that you want to convert, and then click Next.
  7. In the Convert Wizard - Step 2 of 3 dialog box, select whether you want to delete or hide the converted layers or levels, and then click Next.
  8. In the Convert Wizard - Step 3 of 3 dialog box, select the option that you want to convert dimensions and hatch patterns, and then click Finish.
  9. Click the text in the converted drawing. Green selection handles indicate that the text (shape) is selected.

You may want to adjust the zoom level to increase the display size and make it easier view the text in your drawing.
  10. Hold your mouse pointer over the beginning point (square box with an "x" in the center) or end point (square box "+" in the center) of the selection handle, until the mouse pointer changes to a four-headed arrow.
  11. Drag the handle to move the text to the position that you want.
  12. Click Save on the File menu to save your drawing.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

You can insert existing CAD drawings into your Microsoft Visio drawings to use as background images or as detail drawings. If you want to modify or delete objects in the CAD drawing, convert the layers containing those objects into Visio format.

When you convert a CAD drawing, the last saved view of the CAD drawing is converted into Visio format. CAD drawings may have been saved in either model space or paper space. When you convert a drawing saved in model space, all objects and text on the layers that you select are converted into Visio shapes. When you convert a drawing saved in paper space, only the objects that are not cut off by the edge of the view port are converted into Visio shapes. Objects and text that are cut off are converted into lines.

For more information about inserted CAD drawings, type CAD drawing in the Ask a question box or the Answer Wizard, and then press ENTER to view the topics.
