SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Visio, when you try to group a Timeline shape together with Milestones, Intervals, or other Timeline shapes, the Timeline shapes separate from the timeline. This problem occurs when you do either of the following:
  • Select all the shapes on the page and group them together.

    -or-
  • Use the Move Shapes add-on from the Visio Extras macro folder.

CAUSE

The drawing solution contains smart shapes that automatically configure their placement on a timeline. It is not necessary to manually group these shapes together.

RESOLUTION

To correct the appearance of the timeline, use Undo command on the Edit menu or manually ungroup the shapes. Then, reposition the Milestone, Interval, Today Marker, or the Elapsed Time shapes back onto the timeline.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

After you place a shape from the Timeline Shapes stencil onto a Timeline shape, Visio automatically attaches it to the timeline by using logic from the ShapeSheet and Timeline.vsl. Moving or repositioning the timeline also moves the attached Timeline shapes.
