SideWinder Game Controllers that Do Not Require Gaming Software Are Not Displayed in Gaming Options (299043)

After you plug in one of the Microsoft Game Controllers listed at the begining of this article, the controller may be listed in the Device Manager but not in the Gaming Options or Game Controllers control panel and you cannot use the game controller.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when the SideWinder game controller is not listed correctly in the Device Manager.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
- Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
- On the Device Manager tab, check the listings under Sound, video and game controllers. If there are no device conflicts, the Sidewinder Plug and Play game pad USB, SideWinder Joystick 1.0, or SideWinder Game Pad USB are listed here either as an HID-complaint game controller or an HID-compliant device. - On the Driver tab, click Update Driver.
- Click Specify the location of the driver, and then click Next.
- Click Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want, and then click Next.
- In the Models box, there are two drivers listed. Select the unselected driver, and then click Next.
NOTE: In Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, you may receive a message that this device driver was not written specifically for this device. Click Advanced, select the option to warn only, and then click OK. - Follow the remaining steps in the wizard to update the driver, and then quit the Device Manager.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Gaming Options or Game Controllers.
NOTE: Your SideWinder game controller should be listed, and the status should be listed as OK.
