OL2002: Error Message: Could Not Load Backappl.exe Backup Failed (299030)

SYMPTOMS

After you click Save Backup in the Outlook Personal Folders Backup utility, you may receive the following error message:

Could not load backappl.exe Backup Failed!

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the version of the Outlook Personal Folders Backup utility that you are using was designed for Microsoft Outlook 2000. It may be available in Outlook 2002 because you upgraded from Outlook 2000, or because you mistakenly applied the Outlook 2000 version of the utility to an Outlook 2002 installation.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, uninstall the Outlook Personal Folders Backup utility and install the version of the utility designed to work with Outlook 2002 from the Microsoft Office Tools on the Web site.

How to Uninstall the Outlook Personal Folders Backup Utility

Exit Outlook.
On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders Backup, and then click Remove.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, you can use the following steps to temporarily disable the Personal Folder Backup utility COM Add-in to avoid the error message that is described in the "Symptoms" section of this article:

In Outlook, click Options on the Tools menu.
Click the Other tab, and then click the Advanced Options button.
Click the COM Add-Ins button, click to clear the Outlook Backup Addin check box, and then click OK three times.
