  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q298394

SYMPTOMS

When you are connected to a domain controller, you may not be able to view the Configuration container by using the Active Directory Administration utility (Ldp.exe). For example, this issue might occur if Active Directory replication has not occurred between domain controllers.

WORKAROUND

WARNING: If you use the ADSI Edit snap-in, the LDP utility, or any other LDAP version 3 client, and you incorrectly modify the attributes of Active Directory objects, you can cause serious problems. These problems may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, or both. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that occur if you incorrectly modify Active Directory object attributes can be solved. Modify these attributes at your own risk.

To work around this issue and view the Configuration container by using the Ldp utility:
  1. Start the Ldp utility.
  2. On the Connection menu, click Connect.
  3. Type the name of your domain controller and port 389.
  4. In the right pane, scroll up until you see "CN=Configuration,DC=Domain,DC=com" (without the quotation marks), and then copy this value.

NOTE: The Configuration object and the domain entries are case-sensitive.
  5. On the Connection menu, click Bind.
  6. Type the user name, password, and domain of a user who has rights to view Active Directory (such as an Administrator), and then click OK.
  7. On the View menu, click Tree. In the BaseDN box, paste the value that you copied in step 4, and then click OK.
After you perform these steps, you should be able to view the Configuration container in the left pane.
