Poor Video Is Produced When You Encode without a Sound Card (298087)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7
  • Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7.1

This article was previously published under Q298087

SYMPTOMS

When you perform a live capture with the Encoder, the output video may be very jerky. The Encoder statistics do not show any dropped frames or an especially high CPU.

CAUSE

This problem appears to only occur when the Osprey 200 is installed on the computer without a sound card. The Osprey 200 has a playback driver (Osprey 200 Placeholder), which appears to be causing the problem. It appears that the audio samples are being delayed, and as such, video frames are being dropped to catch up.

RESOLUTION

Install a sound to resolve the problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows Media Encoder versions 7 and 7.1.
