This article was previously published under Q297825

SUMMARY

This article describes how to upgrade an evaluation version of Small Business Server (SBS) 2000 to the final, retail-released version of SBS 2000. This includes all 120-day evaluation versions of SBS 2000, but does not apply to MSDN versions of SBS 2000. Note that unlike previous evaluation versions of SBS, SBS 2000 now provides the ability to upgrade software that is designed to expire after a set period of time to the final, retail-released version of SBS 2000.

NOTE: The 120-day evaluation version of SBS 2000 can only be upgraded by the final, retail-released version of SBS 2000, not the upgrade version of SBS 2000.

MORE INFORMATION

To upgrade your computer from the 120-day evaluation version of SBS 2000 to the final, retail-released version of SBS 2000:
  1. Start the Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 Setup Wizard. If the wizard does not start automatically when you insert the CD-ROM, start SBS 2000 Setup by running Setup.exe from the root folder of the SBS 2000 CD-ROM.
  2. When the Microsoft Small Business Server 2000 Setup Wizard starts, click Set Up Small Business Server.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen until you see the Suite Requirements screen and receive the following warning message:
You currently have 5 Client Access Licenses. After upgrading to Small Business Server 2000, this number will be reset to 5.
This warning message is normal and is to be expected because SBS 2000 provides 5 client access licenses (CALs).
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen until you see the Product Identification screen. Type the product key for your final, retail-released version of SBS 2000 and Microsoft Outlook 2000 SR-1.
  5. Follow the instructions on the screen until you see the Component Progress screen. Click Next to upgrade the Microsoft Windows 2000 component of SBS to the final, retail-released version. Your computer will automatically restart when this portion of Setup is complete.
  6. Your computer will automatically restart and then run an unattended installation of Windows 2000 Server. No user input is needed for either the text-mode or GUI portions of the unattended installation. Setup uses the values from the installation of the evaluation version of SBS 2000.
  7. After Setup has completed and the server has restarted, the SBS 2000 Setup dialog box appears. Click Set Up Small Business Server to begin the component-upgrade portion of Setup.
  8. Follow the instructions on the screen until you see the Suite Requirements screen. You receive the warning message that is listed in step 2. Click Next.
  9. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. Note that on the Network Identification screen the DNS domain name and NetBIOS domain name retain their original values and cannot be changed.
  10. Follow the instructions on the screen until you see the Component Selection screen. Components that are already installed have an action of either Install+, Upgrade, or Reinstall+. You should not modify these settings or add any additional components at this time. Any components that are not installed at this time may be added after the installation by using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. Click Next.
  11. From this point on, the installation is completely automated. Follow the instructions on the screen until Setup has completed, and then restart your computer.
