SYMPTOMS

On a computer that uses the Toshiba hardware decoder version 2 or 3, DVD playback in Windows Media Player may be choppy or have no video at all. Although standard DVD troubleshooting may not resolve this issue, playback may work correctly in other DVD playback programs.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if your computer has both a hardware and software decoder. By default, Windows Media Player uses the software decoder, which may be causing the performance degradation.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, configure Windows Media Player to use the hardware decoder:
  1. In Windows Media Player, click Options on the Tools menu.
  2. Click the Performance tab, and then click Advanced.
  3. In the Preferred decoder section, click Hardware.
  4. Click OK to save this change, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
