SYMPTOMS

When you click Search Computer For Media on the Tools menu, the Search for media in box may not include any drive letters. Also, if you click Start Search, the Search Computer For Media window appears, but it may not indicate any search progress.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the fixed disks in your computer are configured as removable media instead of non-removable media.

RESOLUTION

To resolve the issue, make sure that the fixed disks in your computer are configured as non-removable media:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
  2. Click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Double-click the Disk Drive branch to expand it.
  4. Double-click GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE number.
  5. IMPORTANT: Only change the settings for fixed disks that are actually considered to be non-removable media. For example, you would not change the setting for the following types of drives because they are considered to be removable media drives:

    • LS-120 drive
    • IOMEGA Zip drive
    • Floppy disk drive
Click the Settings tab, and then click to clear the Removable check box.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Repeat steps 4-6 for any other GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE number entries under the Disk Drive branch. After you do so, close System Properties, and then restart your computer.
