SYMPTOMS

When you are playing an MPEG2 multimedia file with Microsoft Windows Media Player 7 (WMP) and you attempt to change the screen resolution or color depth in the Display Properties dialog box, the WMP playback screen may go blank or become garbled.

If you then attempt to stop and then restart the MPEG2 video in Windows Media Player, you may receive the following error message:
Windows Media Player Error
No error description could be found for this error.
ErrorCode=0x887601C2)

Depending on which software decoder you have installed, you may either be able to continue normally after you receive the error message, or you may encounter another error that closes Media Player abnormally.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, close Windows Media Player before you attempt to change the resolution or color depth of the desktop in the Display Properties dialog box.
