"STOP 0x000000CE" Error Message in Raspppoe.sys During Upgrade from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 (296946)

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 you may receive the following error message:
STOP: 0x000000CE (0xEEFB2EC4, 0x000000000, 0xEEFB2EC4, 0x00000000)

DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATION

*** Address EEFB2EC4 base at EEFB2EC4, DateStamp 00000000 - Raspppoe.sys
Note that the first address in the pairs (EEFB2EC4) may vary.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if either a Remote Access Service (RAS) dialer or RAS PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) is installed in Windows NT 4.0.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods, as appropriate.

If You Use FAT or FAT32 as Your File System

To resolve this issue if you use file allocation table (FAT) or FAT32 as your file system:
  1. Start your computer to a command prompt by using the a Windows 98 startup disk or MS-DOS disks.
  2. At the A prompt, change the path to %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers, and then rename the Raspppoe.sys file to "Raspppoe.sy_".
  3. Restart your computer to continue Setup.

If You Use NTFS as Your File System

To resolve this issue if you use the NTFS file system as your file system:
  1. Start your computer by using the Windows 2000 CD-ROM or by using the disks that you can make by using the Makeboot.exe tool on the Windows 2000 CD-ROM.
  2. When you are prompted to repair or continue Setup, click Repair, and then click Recovery Console.
  3. Change the path to the %SystemRoot%\System32\Drivers folder, and then rename the Raspppoe.sys file to "Raspppoe.sy_".
  4. Type exit to restart your computer and continue Setup.
