SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Outlook 97, you may receive the following error message:
MAPISP32 caused an invalid page fault in module kernel32.dll
Neither uninstalling and then reinstalling both Outlook and Office 97 nor using the Office 97 CD to replace Mapisp32.exe resolves the behavior.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, rename the Mapi32.dll file and then reinstall Outlook to place a new copy of Mapi32.dll on your computer.

To rename the Mapi32.dll file:
  1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type Mapi32.dll.
  3. In the Look in box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.
  4. Right-click the Mapi32.dll file, click Rename, and then type Mapi32.old.
  5. Press ENTER to accept the name change.
If there are multiple copies of Mapi32.dll, rename them all.

To reinstall Outlook:
  1. If you have recently received an Invalid Page Fault error message, restart your computer to clear the memory.
  2. With no programs running, click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs, click Microsoft Office 97, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. In the Office 97 Setup Maintenance Wizard, click Reinstall.
  5. Continue with any other dialog boxes in Setup to perform the reinstallation.
