This problem can occur if the Exchange 2000 Server administration tools (also known as Exchange System Manager) have been installed and then removed. The SharePoint Portal Server Setup program looks for the following registry key, but it is not present:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Setup

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you need to edit the registry.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this problem:
  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
  2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\

  3. On the Edit menu, click Add Key, and then add the following registry key:

    Key name: Setup
    Class:

NOTE: The Class field is intentionally left blank.

  4. Click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.
  5. Restart the server.
After you perform these steps, you can uninstall or remove SharePoint Portal Server.
