ACC2002: Misleading Error Message When You Click an Access Project (.adp) That Has Been Renamed, Moved, or Deleted in the Task Pane (295214)

SYMPTOMS

When you click an Access project file (.adp) that has been renamed, moved, or deleted in the Task pane, you receive the following error message
The file is not in the correct format for a Microsoft Access Project.
instead of the expected error message:
Microsoft Access can't find the database file '(path to database).'

Make sure you entered the correct path and file name.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Start Access, and then click Project (New Data) in the Task pane.
  2. Click Create to create a new project that is named adp1.adp. Note where the project is being stored.
  3. Quit Access.
  4. Start Windows Explorer. Browse to the location of the file that you created in step 2.
  5. Right-click the file, and then click Rename. Change the name of the file to adp11.adp.
  6. Start Access, and then click adp1.adp in the task pane. Note that you receive the following error message:
    The file is not in the correct format for a Microsoft Access Project.
