WD2002: Word Closes Unexpectedly When You Change Printer Settings on HP 4500 Color LaserJet (294659)

SYMPTOMS

When you change the printer settings on a Hewlett-Packard 4500 Color LaserJet printer by using the Print dialog box in Word, Word may close unexpectedly with the following error message:
Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature similar to the following, where xxxx is the version of the Word 2002 program executable file:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not change the printer settings through the Print dialog box in Word. Change the settings by using the Properties dialog box in the Printers folder. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Close Microsoft Word.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  3. Click to select your printer, and then right-click it. Click Properties on the shortcut menu.
  4. Click Printing Preferences to see more printer options.
  5. After you make your changes, click OK twice to close the dialog boxes.
