SYMPTOMS

When you create a personal folders (.pst) file in Outlook 2001 for Mac, the file name does not contain a .pst extension.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the following steps to add a file extension to your .pst file:

  1. Exit Outlook.
  2. In the Finder, locate the personal folders (.pst) file that you want to rename.
  3. Rename the file to include the .pst extension. For example, a file named "testing" would be renamed to "testing.pst."

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The most common reason for changing the filename to include the .pst extension is to allow your personal folders (.pst) files from an Apple Macintosh to be transferred to a Microsoft Windows computer. Because the Windows version of Outlook requires a file extension to associate the file with the correct program, the file needs to be renamed to incorporate the correct file association.
