Visio2002: Some Lines May Not Be Displayed Correctly After You Export a Visio Drawing to a Graphic File Format (293985)

SYMPTOMS

When you save Microsoft Visio shapes or drawings in graphic file formats, some of the lines that connect the shapes, or some of the lines within the shapes, may be displayed incorrectly. When compared to the original shape or drawing, there may be extra lines, or certain lines may appear choppy with ragged edges and with varying widths.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when you save (or export) Visio shapes and drawings in any of the following INSO file formats:
  • Adobe Illustrator File (.ai)
  • Computer Graphics Metafile (.cgm)
  • Encapsulated Postscript File (.eps)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

When you export a Visio drawing in another file format, Visio data is directed through a filter that converts the data to an independent, non-Visio file. Visio uses INSO filters that provide a means to translate data to and from Visio. After you export a drawing to the other file format, you can then open that file, or import it as a picture in the other program.

Your Visio file may go through up to two translations before it appears in the other program. The first translation occurs when you export it from Visio, and the second translation occurs if you import it into the other program. As a result, the graphic image may not be displayed exactly as it is in your original Visio drawing.
