This article was previously published under Q293904 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to log on to the Windows 2000 Recovery Console, you may receive the following error message:
The password is not valid. Please retype the password.
Then, you are prompted to retype the administrator password.
CAUSE
This problem can occur if your administrator password contains extended characters, for example, ALT+0222, which is equivalent to hexadecimal 07F. The password can function normally in Windows 2000, but you cannot log on to the Recovery Console.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, change the password so that it does not contain extended characters.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
Even though Windows 2000 supports Unicode (the 16-bit character encoding standard), the Recovery Console relies upon the OEM font in the hardware.
