OL2000: Encrypted Attachments May Remain in the Temporary Folder (292756)

This article was previously published under Q292756

SUMMARY

In Outlook 2000, when you open and edit Microsoft Word encrypted attachments in Word, they may remain unencrypted in the Temporary folder.

MORE INFORMATION

When you open a Word attachment in a message, a temporary file is created in the system Temporary folder. If you close the message, you may receive the following message (or a similar message):

A program still has file attachment <attachmentname> open. Changes to this document will be lost unless you save your changes to another file by clicking the File menu in the other program, and then clicking Save As

If the circumstances are normal, when you close the program that edits the attachment, the unencrypted attachment remains in the Temporary folder until you close Outlook 2002. After you close Outlook 2002, the unencrypted attachment is removed from the Temporary folder.

The unencrypted attachment may remain in the Temporary folder if a system error occurs, such as an Invalid Page Fault, if a power failure occurs, or if an event occurs that would otherwise prevent Outlook 2002 from shutting down.
