Cannot use keyboard shortcuts to select ranges in RefEdit control in Excel (291110)

SYMPTOMS

When you use a RefEdit control in a user form, you cannot use keyboard shortcuts, such as CTRL+SHIFT+END, to enter a range in the RefEdit control.

Additionally, if you launch the Chart Wizard or the PivotTable Wizard from the popup menu, when you hold down CTRL+ARROW key to select a range in the PivotTable Wizard or in the Chart Wizard, the shortcut key does not work correctly.

RESOLUTION

Excel 2000

How to turn on the hotfix by using the QFE_Richmond registry key

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. To turn on the hotfix listed in this article, add the following registry key and value.
  1. Quit Excel if it is running.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type regedit , and then click OK.
  4. Locate and then select the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\office\9.0\Excel\options

  5. On the Edit menu, click New, and then click DWORD value.
  6. Type QFE_Richmond for the new value, and then press ENTER.
  7. Right-click the QFE_Richmond registry key, and then click Modify.
  8. In the Value data box, type 1.
  9. Click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Add the registry key

Excel 2002

To work around this issue in Excel 2002, add the following registry key. The fix is included in the initial release of Excel 2002. Therefore, there is no hotfix to download for Excel 2002.

  1. Exit Excel.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then select the following registry key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\office\10.0\Excel\options

  4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD value.
  5. Type QFE_Richmond, and then press ENTER.
  6. Right-click QFE_Richmond, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1.
  8. Click OK, and then exit Registry Editor.

Excel 2003

To work around this issue in Excel 2002, add the following registry key. The fix is included in the initial release of Excel 2003. Therefore, there is no hotfix to download for Excel 2003.

  4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD value.
  5. Type QFE_Richmond, and then press ENTER.
  6. Right-click QFE_Richmond, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1.
  8. Click OK, and then exit Registry Editor.

Method 2: Use the mouse to select the range

When you are in the Wizard RefEdit Control, use the mouse to select the range instead of using the keyboard shortcut.

Method 3: Use the toolbar instead of right-clicking the menu

This issue does not occur if you use the menu instead of right-clicking to invoke the PivotTable Wizard. To do this, click PivotTable and PivotChart Report on the Data menu.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP-3).
