SYMPTOMS

If Outlook is set as your default e-mail program, the Mail Recipient (As Attachment) option may be missing when you click Send To on the File menu in Microsoft Office 2000 programs. In addition, you may receive one of the following error messages
Word couldn't send mail because of MAPI failure: 'Unspecified error'
-or-
General mail failure. Quit Microsoft Excel, restart the mail system, and try again
when you click Send To on the File menu in one of the Microsoft Office 97 programs.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Win.ini configuration file is incomplete.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, modify the Win.ini file (by using any plain text editor, such as Notepad, or the Sysedit utility). To do this:
  1. Find the full path for the Win.ini file. To do this:
    1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

      If you are running Microsoft Windows 2000, click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
    2. In the Named box, type win.ini.
    3. In the Look in box, click drive C.
    4. Verify that the Include subfolders check box is selected, and then click Find Now.

      If you are running Windows 2000, in the Search for files or folders named box, type win.ini, click drive C in the Look in box, and then click Search Now.
    5. In the Results pane, note the full path of the Win.ini file. If more than one file is listed, select the file whose path begins C:\Windows or C:\Winnt.
  2. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Notepad.
  3. In Notepad, on the File menu, click Open.
  4. In the Look in box, type the full path name of the Win.ini file that you noted in step C.
  5. Find the section that begins with [Mail], and then add the following lines. Some lines may already exist, but you need all of them for this feature:

    [Mail]
    MAPI=1
    CMC=1
    CMCDLLNAME=mapi.dll
    CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
    MAPIX=1
    MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1
    OLEMessaging=1

  6. Click Save, and then exit Notepad.
  7. Click Start, click Shut Down, and then click Restart the Computer.
When you click Send To on the File menu in Microsoft Office 2000 programs, the Mail Recipient, Mail Recipient (As Attachment), or Routing Recipient options are available.
