SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Search Service may not respond to a NET STOP request during a large Full Text Catalog population.

RESOLUTION

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 1.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

Start a full text population on a table that contains more than 500,000 records.
Wait until approximately 500,000 records have been processed.
Attempt to stop the Mssearch service by issuing this command:
```
net stop mssearch
					
```

The following result may display at the command prompt:

The Microsoft Search service is stopping..........................................................................
The Microsoft Search service could not be stopped.
