SYMPTOMS

When you begin to type a sentence within a shape or text box, if you insert a space, a carriage return, a period, or a semicolon, Microsoft Visio automatically capitalizes the first letter of the first word in the sentence (or line).

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the Capitalize first letter of sentences check box is selected as an AutoCorrect feature. AutoCorrect is an automatic correction and formatting feature in Visio that performs certain functions for you while you are typing.

For example, if you click to select the Correct TWo INitial CApitals check box, and you then accidentally capitalize the first two letters of a word, Microsoft Visio corrects the capitalization for you.

The Capitalize first letter of sentences check box is selected by default. When it is selected, Visio capitalizes the first letter of any word that follows a period, a carriage return, a semicolon, or the first letter of any single word in a list or table column.

RESOLUTION

If you do not want AutoCorrect to capitalize your words for you, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Turn off the "Capitalize first letter of sentences" feature

  1. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.
  2. Click the AutoCorrect tab.
  3. Click to clear the Capitalize first letter of sentences check box.
  4. Click OK.

Method 2: Use the Undo feature

If AutoCorrect makes a change that you do not want to keep, click Undo on the Edit menu or press CTRL+Z.
