OL2002: Cannot Insert an Exchange Shortcut File into a Mail Message by Using Insert Menu (290033)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to insert a Microsoft Exchange shortcut file (.xnk) into a mail message by using the Insert menu in Outlook 2002, nothing happens, and the following error message may appear:
Cannot resolve this link. This file may not be a shortcut.

However, if you either drag or copy and paste the file into the message, you can successfully add the file.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, either copy and paste the file, or drag the file into the mail message.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
