Control Panel View Options Do Not Function As Expected (288592)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q288592

SYMPTOMS

In Control Panel, the link to the Display only commonly used Control Panel options option is unavailable, and Control Panel may not display in Web view.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Controlp.htt file located in the C:\Windows\Web\ folder is either missing or corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, you must rebuild the Controlp.htt file, by performing the following steps:

  1. If the file is still present, rename it.

NOTE: For information about how to rename a file, click Start, click Help, in the Search box, type: renaming files, click Go, and then click the To change the name of a file or folder topic.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Open box, type: regsvr32 webvw.dll.
  4. Click OK. (This action extracts the file to the C:\Windows\Web folder.)
  5. The following message should be displayed: "DllRegisterServer in webvw.dll succeeded."
  6. The Control Panel folder should display properly in Web view and the Display only commonly used Control Panel options option should have been restored. Either refresh the view in Control Panel (if it is still open), or close it and open it again to observe the changes.
