OL2002: PAB Addresses Are Missing After You Upgrade (288442)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q288442

SYMPTOMS

If you previously used Microsoft Outlook 97, Microsoft Outlook 98, or Microsoft Outlook 2000 and stored e-mail addresses in the Personal Address Book (PAB), these addresses are not available, even though you view the same personal folders (.pst) file that you used with the earlier version of Microsoft Outlook, after you upgrade to Outlook 2002.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because during the upgrade process, Setup detected a Personal Address Book service in your Outlook e-mail profile. You receive the following prompt:

You currently have a Personal Address Book in your profile. Outlook Contacts now support personal distribution lists, and can automatically import all entries in your Personal Address Book, and remove it from your profile. We recommend removing the Personal Address Book and using Outlook Contacts instead. Would you like to import your Personal Address Book now?

If you click No, the Personal Address Book is maintained in your Outlook e-mail profile. If you click Yes, the contents of your Personal Address Book are imported, and the service is removed from your Outlook e-mail profile.

MORE INFORMATION

The Personal Address Book is a separate file from your .pst file. If you upgrade from an earlier version of Outlook without importing the PAB, it appears that the entries are lost. The PAB is never altered and you can import it at any time after you upgrade.

The first time you run Outlook 2002, it detects the presence of the PAB file that was identified in the pre-existing Outlook e-mail profile. It prompts you to import these addresses into the Outlook Contacts folder. If you click Yes, the old PAB entries are imported into the Outlook Contacts folder. If you click No, the PAB file is not be imported. The PAB can be imported at a later time if it is still on your computer. To do this:
  1. On the File menu, click Import and Export. If the menu item is not visible, hover the mouse pointer over the chevrons at the bottom of the menu, and then click Import And Export.
  2. Click Import from another program or file, and then click Next.
  3. Click to select Personal Address Book, and then click Next
  4. In the Select destination folder dialog box, click to select the desired Contacts folder to import your Personal Address Book to, and then click Next.
  5. Click the Map Custom Fields button.
  6. In the Map Custom Fields dialog box, make any mapping changes necessary, and then click OK. Normally there should not be any changes.
  7. Click Finish.
Use the following steps to locate your Personal Address Book:
  1. Click Start, point to Find or point to Search, and then click Files or Folders.
  2. In the Named box, type *.pab.
  3. Verify that your entire hard disk drive is being searched by making the appropriate selection in the Look In box.
  4. Click to select the Include Subfolders check box.
  5. Click Find Now.
  6. Make a note of the results.
