SUMMARY

This article describes how to connect to MSN, the Microsoft Network, e-mail accounts. Currently, MSN offers the following three types of e-mail accounts:
  • MSN Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) account. This is a fee-based account that also provides access to the Internet and many other member benefits.
  • MSN Web-based account. This is a fee-based account that is available to MSN 9 Dial-up, MSN Premium, and MSN Hotmail Plus subscribers.
  • Microsoft Outlook Connector for MSN. This is a subscription-based product that is currently available to MSN 9.0 Premium customers. Outlook Connector for MSN works in the background. With this product, users can use Microsoft Outlook to manage one set of communication tools such as their contact list, task list, e-mail inbox, and calendar in the office or at home. Outlook Connector for MSN is compatible with Microsoft Outlook 2002 and Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 and has the following features:
    • 25-megabyte (MB) inbox
    • 10 MB attachment
    • 39 MB group storage

After you have installed Outlook 2002 and have obtained an MSN e-mail account, you can use the information in this section to configure either type of MSN account.

How to Configure Outlook with an MSN POP3 Account

Use the following steps to configure Outlook 2002 with an MSN POP3 account:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Mail icon.
  3. Click E-mail Accounts.
  4. Click to select Add a new e-mail account, and then click Next.
  5. Click to select POP3, and then click Next.
  6. Type the following setting information:
    1. In the Your Name box: type you name as you want it to appear to recipients.
    2. In the Incoming Mail Server (POP3) box: type pop3.email.msn.com.
    3. In the E-mail Address box: type your e-mail address, for example, "myemail@msn.com".
    4. In the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) box: type smtp.email.msn.com.
    5. In the User Name box, type your MSN account name.
    6. Click to check the Remember Password checkbox.
    7. In the Password box, type your MSN password.
    8. Click to check the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) checkbox.
  7. Click More Settings.
  8. On the Outgoing Server tab, click to select the My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication box.
  9. Click to select Use same settings as my incoming mail server, and then click OK.
  10. Click Next, and then click Finish.
You can now send and receive MSN POP3 messages.

How to Configure Outlook with an MSN Web-based Account

Use the following steps to configure Outlook 2002 with an MSN Web-based:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Mail icon.
  3. Click E-mail Accounts.
  4. Click to select Add a new e-mail account, and then click Next.
  5. Click to select HTTP, and then click Next.
  6. Type the following setting information:
    • In the Your Name box: type you name as you want it to appear to recipients.
    • In the E-mail Address box: type your e-mail address, for example, myemail@msn.com. (Notice that the HTTP Mail Service Provider setting automatically switches to MSN from Hotmail when you exit the e-mail address box)
    • In the User Name box: type your MSN account name.
    • In the Password box: enter your password if you want to save it.
    • In the Remember password box: click to select if you want to have your password saved.
    • Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA): do not click to select this check box.
  7. Click More Settings.
  8. Configure the Connection tab, as needed.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Click Next, and then click Finish.
Your MSN Web-based Inbox now appears in the Outlook Bar and the Folder List.
