Error Message "Too Many Search Results" Occurs When You Search the Global Address List (287108)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Mobile Information 2001 Server

This article was previously published under Q287108

SYMPTOMS

When you use your mobile device to resolve names in the Global Address List, you may receive the following error message:
Too many search results
This issue may occur even if there are only a few entries or no entries in the Global Address List that match the letters in the search criteria you have entered.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if you enter the following letters or combinations of letters:
  • S, SM, SMT, SMTP
  • X, X4, X40, X400
The ProxyAddress attribute is part of the Global Address List ambiguous name resolution search. Because "SMTP" or "X400" is included in the e-mail address for any user in the Global Address List, these letters act as wildcard characters to retrieve all matching addresses.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use a concise combination of letters to search for the user in the Global Address List. Avoid using the specific combinations that are listed in the preceding section.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
