Default Web Site Is Not Published to External Clients When Web Proxy Is Installed (287059)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0
This article was previously published under Q287059 SYMPTOMS
The Default Web Site on a Proxy Server computer is not visible to external clients even though All Unassigned is selected for the Internet Protocol (IP) address in the Default Web Site properties. However, when you create new Web sites and you either use All Unassigned or specify the Web site IP address, the new sites are published to external clients.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, for the Default Web Site, enable Web Publishing in the Web Proxy settings, and send all incoming requests to the local server. Follow these steps: - Start Microsoft Management Console (MMC), and navigate to the Default Web Site.
- Right-click Web Proxy, and then click Properties.
- Click the Publishing tab.
- Click Enable Web Publishing.
- Choose to have the request sent to the local Web server.
- Stop and then restart the Web Proxy Service.
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
MORE INFORMATION
When you install Proxy Server 2.0, by default, W3proxy.dll is running as an Internet Server API (ISAPI) extension on the Default Web Site. W3proxy.dll filters out requests from external clients, and does not accept any incoming connections. It will only accept incoming connections after the Enable Web Publishing setting is turned on.
Any new Web site you create will not contain the w3proxy.dll as an ISAPI extension by default, and therefore will not be bound by the Enable Web Publishing setting of Web Proxy. Web Proxy runs only on the Default Web Site. This is by design of Proxy Server 2.0.
