  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

This article was previously published under Q286731

SYMPTOMS

If you uninstall a program from your Windows XP Home Edition-based computer, and then uninstall Windows XP Home Edition and restore your Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition installation, the program you uninstalled still appears in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. Note that this behavior occurs even if you uninstall more than one program.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the program you uninstalled from your Windows XP Home Edition-based computer was installed while you were still running Windows 98 Second Edition. As a precautionary feature (in case you want to restore your previous operating system), Windows XP Home Edition does not support the removal of programs that were installed while you ran a previous operating system.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue and remove a program from the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel on your Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer, reinstall the program, and then uninstall it.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
