Some Programs Rely on Existence or Behavior of Earlier Versions of the Riched32.dll File (286709)

SYMPTOMS

The following programs may not run in Windows XP due to a Runtime Error 5 message:

Resume Maker Deluxe 7.0
Resume Maker Deluxe 8.0
Macromedia Drumbeat 2000
SPSS 10.0

In these programs, when you perform any of the following actions

Export to a word processing program.
Copy the document to the clipboard.
Select to create a new resume.

you may receive the following error message:

Run-time error '5':
Invalid procedure call or argument.

If you click OK, the program may close without saving the document.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the programs that are listed in the "Symptoms" section of this article rely on the existence or behavior of earlier versions of certain binaries (.dll files).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, manually copy the Riched32.dll file into the program directory from the Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) CD to replace the system version of the file:

Insert the Windows Me CD.
Click Start, click My Computer, and then right-click the CD-ROM drive in which you inserted the Windows Me CD.
Click Open.
Double-click the Win9x folder.
Double-click the Win_14.cab file.
Right-click the Riched32.dll file.
Click Extract.
Expand the My Computer folder.
Expand the drive that contains the Program Files folder, and then expand the Program Files folder.
Expand the folder of the program that you are using.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
