This article was previously published under Q286206 SYMPTOMS
If a user sends mail to a Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS) user who has enabled the auto-reply function, the user may receive multiple autoreply messages.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because autoreply is implemented by the SMTP event sink. When a message arrives, the SMTP service triggers the event sink first before the service dispatches the message to the user's mailbox. If the mailbox is locked, the dispatch process does not work.
The SMTP service retries the dispatch process, which triggers the event sink during each retry. Several conditions can cause a locked mailbox, for example, a slow POP3 connection or a message stuck in the queue.
